Since the announcement was made on Thursday, there has been much discussion over Christian Lacroix filing for bankruptcy. “The French couturier whose artistic and exuberant pouf dresses propelled him to fame in the 1980s became the latest victim of the global financial crisis…” wrote Suzy Menkes in The New York Times. The company submitted a petition for protection from creditors in a Paris court. Whether it will be restructured or liquidated has yet to be determined.
I have attended Lacroix’s Haute Couture shows for several years, and they are — in a word — divine. The outstanding contribution his imagination brings to Haute Couture would be missed. I hope that he will show in July, even with a smaller or scaled-back presentation. It would be a terrible loss to fashion otherwise.

I agree, it would be terrible if the company were liquidated. Even more catastrophic would be the body blow dealt to haute couture in general were he to leave the scene. Rarely in fashion today do we see such an elevated sense of fantasy, taste, and craftsmanship intertwined in such an imaginative and compelling way.
