Thanksgiving Wine Suggestions

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner or having someone else carve the turkey, a good wine on the table is of utmost importance.  We consulted three of the best wine stores in the city, and here are their top wine suggestions for toasting this Thanksgiving:

Astor Wines and Spirits: this Greenwich Village fixture is our go-to destination for downtown spirits shopping.  For Thanksgiving this year, the Astor wine buyer recommends a sparkling Malbec from Argentina: Terra Sparkling Malbec, Viniterra, 2008.  It’s a fresh complement to hearty dinner fare, pairing nicely with Thanksgiving dishes from tart to rich and sweet.  Typically, people think of sparkling wines as only being white.  This wine is unique because it’s an off-dry to dry sparkling red, and it’s also incredibly berried and fruit-forward.  Drink with a chill and serve up.  The cost is very affordable –  you might consider purchasing a case so that everyone at your Thanksgiving gathering has plenty to enjoy.

Sherry-Lehmann: this venerable Upper East Side wine and spirits shop recommends a wine from Belle Glos (owned by California’s famous Caymus Vineyards).  They suggest the Belle Glos “Clark & Telephone Vineyard” (Santa Maria Valley) Pinot Noir 2007. Clark & Telephone Vineyard is cooled by wind and fog that approaches from the Pacific Ocean along a channel of the Santa Maria River.  “Now 35 years old, the vineyard was planted “own root” to the Martini clone.  This heirloom clone of Pinot Noir — one of the first to grace the California coastlands — has become something of a lost treasure.”  The hints of spice, cinnamon, and ripe rich fruit in this wine make it an ideal complement to Thanksgiving dinner.

Gotham Wines and Liquors: Gotham Wines on the Upper West Side suggests taking a different approach from the traditional Thanksgiving wine pairings of Zinfandel and Beaujolais Nouveau.  Instead, their pick for 2008 leans toward more of a classic style: Merlot.  That’s right, Merlot.   Gotham insists you can find great Merlots from Washington State, France or any other countries you wish to explore.  Their top choice is the Falesco Montiano 2004, a red wine from Lazio.  Its dark garnet in color and has flavors of dry black fruit, cured black olives, cloves, milk chocolate, and hints of vanilla and licorice.  With soft round tannins and rich body, the Falesco Montiano is perfect for a Thanksgiving feast.

Winebow: Finally, we conferred with our friends at Winebow, America’s leading importer of premium Italian wine and one of the largest distributors in New York.  They recommend the Allegrini Palazzo della Torre from the Valpolicella region of Italy as one of the best wines for Thanksgiving.  This is an innovative ripasso-style wine that is rich, juicy and refined.  Its aromas of currant and dried spice pair well with the traditional turkey and cranberry sauce meal.  You can find the Palazzo at fine wine emporiums throughout New York and in the three stores mentioned above.

Inherited Beauty – Susan Tabak’s 2008 Chic List

Once again, attention focused on generations of chic…the mothers, daughters, fathers and sons with prevailing beauty and superior style. Here are my most recent additions to the previous list of Inherited Beauties:

Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn

Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn

Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson
Goldie Hawn’s California beauty is iconic, and daughter Kate Hudson takes after her with wild blonde waves, bohemian style, and breezy glamour. Kate can dazzle in Versace or Dior, but she’s equally at home in a simple hippie sundress. Both Goldie and Kate are beautiful here on the red carpet, but the comfort and confidence they exude is what makes them truly radiant.

Gianni Agnelli and Lapo Elkann

Gianni Agnelli, the legendary head of the Fiat car company and Italy’s unofficial patriarch, was internationally renowned for his impeccable style and dress. He had a collection of exquisite bespoke Caraceni suits, and his bold accessorizing redefined Italian fashion. Grandson and Fiat heir Lapo Elkann has emerged as the next tastemaker within the Agnelli dynasty, appearing regularly on international best-dressed lists for his daring and eccentric personal style. Rumored to have inherited over 200 of his grandfather’s Caraceni suits, his wardrobe is a mash-up of classic Italian and contemporary labels. His look is wildly colorful, heavily detailed and totally his own.

Rashida Jone and Perggy Lipton

Rashida Jones and Peggy Lipton

Peggy Lipton and Rashida Jones
Nearly 40 years since she debuted on the hit television show The Mod Squad, actress and socialite Peggy Lipton is still stunning. Her commitment to healthy living and fitness is obvious. Rashida Jones, her daughter with music mogul Quincy Jones, is gorgeous, too. She always looks put-together, whether in a flowy cocktail dress for press events or in a simple camisole and denim out and about in LA.

Ralph Lauren and sons Andrew and David Lauren

There are trendsetters, there are provocateurs, and then there is the master of timeless fashion: Ralph Lauren. His personal look is rugged and eternally cool, and his classic design style is reflected in sons Andrew Lauren and David Lauren.

Georgina Brandolini and daughters Bianca Brandolini and Coco Brandolini Colombo
After 22 years as Valentino’s muse and brilliant press attaché, Georgina Brandolini joined Balmain as an executive and managed the prêt-à-porter for six years. In 2005, she opened her first Parisian boutique, featuring her own knitwear collection. Georgina’s casual yet sophisticated personal style was an inspiration for Chic in Paris. Her two daughters, Bianca and Coco, are fashionistas with marvelous styles of their own. Here are the girls at Valentino’s 45th anniversary celebration in Rome, honoring their mother’s mentor — in his designs, of course.

Bob Dylan and Jakob Dylan
Bob Dylan is regarded as one of the most influential musical and cultural forces of the twentieth century. Whether wearing a plaid flannel shirt and old corduroy coat as an early folk star or skinny stovepipe pants, a Collegiate blazer and black Wayfarers in his late 60s heyday, Dylan defined the changing times. His striking son, singer/songwriter Jakob Dylan, has a chic minimalist style, favoring well-tailored black separates.

Natalie Wood and Natasha Gregson-Wagner
Having successfully transitioned from famous child actor to leading lady, Natalie Wood was a Hollywood star with doe-eyes and a string of studio paramours. Though her story is marked by her tragic accidental drowning in 1981, Wood remains a film icon. Her daughter Natasha Gregson-Wagner quietly rose to fame in the early nineties for her own acting work, and her delicate beauty is a mirror of her mother’s.

John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy, Jr. President Kennedy invigorated the White House with charisma and fashionable style. Of course, his best look was with Jackie by his side. They defined American chic, and their son John F. Kennedy Jr. continued the legacy. His intelligence and affable nature only enhanced his handsome appeal.

Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson
Actress Vanessa Redgrave has been garnering rave reviews for her work on stage and screen for decades. Her fierce intelligence and at times controversial opinions have often eclipsed her elegance over the years. Her daughter Natasha Richardson is a highly respected actress as well. Here the duo, photographed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala in 2007, demonstrate timeless beauty.

Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas
Kirk Douglas is an American screen legend, appearing in more than one hundred films since the 1940s. He’s famous for playing intense and macho roles, but his good sense of style, clef chin, and steely gaze are instantly recognizable. His son Michael Douglas followed in his footsteps, not only as a successful actor and producer, but also as a gentleman with sensible style.
